Deeply Concerned MHS Student started this petition to MHS Staff and

For far too long, the Year 9 and 10 cohorts within MHS have been oppressed by the backwards system that is Junior Sport. While such barbaric activities as the ones currently being enforced upon students may have been considered suitable in the past, there is no doubt that this notion is completely outdated and obsolete in today's modern era.

It makes no sense to force every student to have to partake in a physically-demanding sport such as the ones currently listed. If one does not have the sheer mechanical ability and motor skills that are required, then it is impossible to compete on the same level as one's peers. If this is not a form of Social Darwinism, then I don't know what is. Some students may have previous experience in particular sports, or may just be gifted with a greater physique - whatever the reason, there will always be people who are disadvantaged on a physical level, one that cannot be overcome no matter how hard you try.

In addition to this, the sport that you are assigned for Junior Sport may not even necessarily be one that you picked in the first place. To use an anecdote, a good friend of mine, Ken Dang, put Cross Country as his last preference last year for Junior Sport. Guess what happened? He was forced to do Cross Country, not once, but twice out of the three rotations last year! That is absolutely ludicrous. Imagine if you were forced to participate in a sport that you have never played or are incredibly bad at, amongst people that actually wanted to play that sport. Imagine if you were a non-swimmer and you got assigned Water Polo by the dysfunctional algorithm that MHS uses to distribute sports. Ridiculous.

Given all of this, it makes far more sense to scrap all of the current sports from Junior Sport and replace them with a sport that is far more inviting instead - chess. Whereas there will always be an inherent barrier within physical sports, no such barrier exists in the context of a cerebral sport such as chess. Unlike the above sports, the only thing limiting you in chess is your own mind, and that grants equal opportunity for anyone to win. And it would be quite fitting for the representative sport of the esteemed Melbourne High School to be an intellectual one such as chess - after all, think back to how you got here in the first place!

However, this does not mean that chess is devoid of physical exertion either. In the World Chess Championship of 1984, Anatoly Karpov famously lost 10kg while trying to defend his title against Garry Kasparov! As such, there is no excuse that can be made against implementing chess into Junior Sport. It is clearly the superior option and so I call upon you now to vote, for this petition marks the start of a revolution.
