Beware of Railway Food Scam

A retired IAS officer's account on how meals in our trains are overpriced by almost 100 per cent. A vegetarian meal that costs Rs 50 is sold for Rs 90 and the non-vegetarian meal is sold at Rs 100 when it originally costs Rs 55. As per one of the estimate, every day around 25 million passenger travel from Indian Railways , if only 0.5% of these passengers takes either lunch or dinner from pantry cars , even extra rupees 30 on each plate will make these people rich by Rs 37,500,000.

Protapta Das, a Facebook user, recently wrote a post calling out a ‘catering scam’ in Railways pantry cars. Attributed to a retired IAS officer Shivendra K Sinha, the post implies that Yesvantpur-Howrah Express pantry car in-charge and other workers tried selling the passenger food at double the prices. Upon searching on the Internet for IRCTC’s latest menu rates, it was apparently found that veg meals that the pantry worker was selling at Rs 90, was in fact of Rs 50. They also apparently refused to show the passenger the rate card of the food items. The post insists people to ask for a bill every time they order food on the train to not fall prey to the “scam”.

He filed a complaint with the in-charge and in return, he was to get a copy of the complaint. He filed the complaint saying that he was charged more for his meal but to his surprise, the in-charge wrote, "taken only Rs 50 from customer Bill No XXX and this customer writes complaint every time he travels.

Surprisingly The Ministry of Railways has rubbished the claims of a passenger Protapta Das, who took to Facebook last week to allege that the Railways was engaging in what he termed as a “catering scam”.

It is our humble request to our Hon'ble Railway Minister to look into this issue as this situation remains part of each and every running train and the reputation of railway is at stake just because of some corrupt people. Railway is lifeline of Our country and if such malpractice keeps on going such widespread stage then common people will lose faith in our system
