The Problems with UMA lunch
At Utah Military Academy we are given 30 minutes of lunch. This is the time we have to form the lunch line, get our food, eat, and socialize as this is some of the only socialization time we have throughout the school day. It has been argued that 30 minutes is the same amount of time given at surrounding schools therefore there is no need to extend our lunch, however this is not enough time for the students at Utah Military Academy and here is why.
At other schools, the lunch line begins moving as soon as the bell to go to lunch rings, however the trend recently has been that the line does not begin moving until 5-10 minutes after the bell rings, giving us only 20-25 minutes to complete all the tasks mentioned above. Due to this I have noticed several students that have only had 5 minutes to eat their food and this has caused us to be able to focus less in class. Another occurrence at other schools is the incorporation of more than 2 lines which makes it possible for all students to have adequate time to get their food and eat.
This was a problem prior to us becoming a closed campus, however especially now that we are a closed campus for lunch, it is important that we are able to make sure all students have enough time to eat so that we are able to focus on our learning while we are in class. The way in which we recommend fixing this is by adding an extra 10 minutes to our lunch and by beginning the lunch line as soon as the lunch bell rings. We can do this by taking time off of our flight time or other classes to extend the lunch period as well as making sure whomever is in charge of counting the students getting lunch is in the cafeteria on time and ready to go. If getting the person counting lunches there on time is a problem, assign it to a willing student and excuse then from class a few minutes early.
