To,

The Hon’ble President

Government of India

New Delhi

Sub :- Demand to take necessary action to Save Bengal Chemical &
Pharmaceutical Ltd.

Respected Sir,

Acharya Prafulla Ch. Roy is the Father of Modern Science in India. He,
for the first time initiated the higher education and Research Work on
Chemistry in our country. He founded the “Bengal Chemical &
Pharmaceutical Works” in the year 1892, to make our country
self-dependent on Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry Bengal Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals (the country’s first pharma company). At the beginning year of 20th Century this institution turned into a Limited Company. This time the Capital of this Company was Rs. 50,000/-
. Later this Capital increased thrice and became 22 lacks. It is well
known that this Company started its journey with a personal capital of
Rs. 800/- only which was invested by Acharya Prafulla Ch. Roy himself.

After our Independence, the Bengal Chemical passed five decades
successfully. Apart from Panihati and Maniktola there are a number of
branches of this Company outside Bengal. Chemical Products of this
Company are highly appreciated all over the world. As a result this
Company became more and more popular.

Founder of the Bengal Chemical realized that to keep the Company
running, modernization of its technology is a must. He proposed in a
meeting of the Share Holders that a part of the dividend should be
kept aside for the modernization project. But unfortunately , the
other share holders disagree with him. It was very much shocking to
him So he resigned from the Managing Committee.

Lack of modernization may throw a running Company to sickness and even
abolition- -it had happened many time with the Bengal Chemical. But
the Govt of India came forward again and again to save the Company
from abolition.

Now, after a long gap, when this Company started to earn profit ( How India’s oldest pharma company smelt success after 6 decades ), the
Government has taken a plan to close this Company. The
aggressive attitude of the multi-nationals is mainly responsible
behind this planning. The Bengal Chemical is a heritage institution.
So, irrespective of our political views , we demand to keep alive of
this Company. Let all concerned sit together to save this Company.

On the eve of the 7th Decade of our Independence, we must keep our
eyes alert so that this Company remain alive.

Under the circumstances mentioned above, we, the people of India, beg to you to take necessary steps so that instead of taking decision to close the Bengal Chemical & Pharmaceutical, a plan to revive, modernize and professionalize this heritage institution should be taken. This heritage institution, which is not only proud of India but also a road to achieve our dreamed project Make in India (makes our country a manufacturing hub), has the potential to create thousands of jobs, export Indian products.

Faithfully Yours,
