Allow students to resume free play activities in school subject to safe distancing.
In phase 2 of the Circuit Breaker exit in Singapore, sports and recreational centers are reopening. However, we are still unable to have free play activities in school. I think that this is uncalled for, as most free play activities take place outdoors, it is considerably safer than a class of students cooped up in a classroom where they are more likely to flout safe distancing measures.
Plus, in class with nothing to do, students are more likely to start using their devices in class, something that is usually not allowed, because of this, they are more likely to get scolded. Furthermore, a five-a-side or four-a-side game still does not flout the rule of 5 when it comes to groups. I understand that we have to obey by safe distancing measures, but even in this crisis, I believe that we can still strike a balance between safety and fun.
If the Singapore Sports Council has allowed people to start playing in courts, then why not let students play during free time? Think about it, look at professional sports clubs like the Premier League, which have resumed playing amidst the pandemic without substantial amounts of new cases. Thus, this is a perfect example of how an aforementioned balance between safety and fun can be achieved.
I know that It all boils down to trust, but I believe that students would rather observe safe distancing and be able to play freely than flout them and get cooped up in classrooms. Which is why I believe this idea is feasible and should be implemented.
