Holiday lights at Osseo Senior High
This petition had 781 supporters
As of now, we are not allowed to hang holiday lights at our high school, Osseo Senior High School. This is a tradition that has gone on for years here at Osseo. We do not know who exactly made the decision not to hang the lights but we were told it was because the lights are not inclusive of everyone at our school. We believe it is not true because of these reasons:
We specifically call the lights “holiday lights” and not “Christmas lights” to recognize other holidays that may be going on at the time to include Kwanza, Hanukkah, and other holidays.
Christmas can also be inclusive to non-christians. The Pew Research Center says that Christmas is not necessarily a christian holiday. 81% of non-christians in the United States celebrate christmas.
The U.S. supreme court has permitted holiday displays with legitimate secular purposes such as christmas trees, lights, Santa Claus, and etc. The supreme court ruled in favor of these decorations 3 out of 3 times in Lynch v. Donnelly, Skoros v. City of New York, and Allegheny v. ACLU.
We believe that Osseo Senior High is a school where all cultures are appreciated. We just want to enjoy simple aspects of high school such as wearing black to a football game or having a U.S.A. theme for spirit week. Hopefully this petition will receive enough signatures to sway the administration into let us hang our lights and decorate our hallways.
