The Year 12 area pleads desperately for food amenities!
Why this petition matters
Dear fellow comrades (students) and educators,
There is a serious issue that has plagued the hallways of STL since 2018. An issue that needs YOUR help to solve. FOOD AMENITIES.
The year 12 area, despite its flawless architecture and interior design is severely lacking in one crucial aspect.... its absence of a microwave and kettle. In these difficult months, ahead of many of us look forward to the comfort of a hot lunch or soothing tea. Many a time past students have found refuge in the bottom of a coffee cup, however that all changed in 2018 when kettles and microwaves were OUTLAWED. One might argue that students have access to the canteen which offers a wide range of hot drinks and foods. THIS IS THE ARGUMENT OF THE PRIVILEGED AND OUT OF TOUCH. Many of us are unemployed, due in part to the extreme workload, and, contrary to popular belief, do not possess trust funds. (speaking for myself at least).
I am not alone in this discomfort and pain. To quote fellow student and SCHOOL CAPTAIN, Emily Knott, "I'd go crazy* if I could bring a bowl and some noodles to school,"
The only other, somewhat valid argument I can perceive against the installation of a microwave and kettle is the dangerous hazard. This argument can be quickly debunked as microwaves and kettles are installed in almost every home in Australia, and students will therefore be experienced with the correct use practices. Additionally, certain microwaves can be bought that don't blow up when in contact with metal. Another obvious reason in favour of microwaves and kettles is obvious; our age. The vast majority of the student body will be legal adults by the end of the year. To be denied the privilege of a microwave and kettle is to demote us to the status of ELC.
We understand the price of these amenities can be expensive, and appreciate the value of money. I can guarantee that all students who sign this petition would be willing to pitch in for the cost as with the large student body, that sum would be cheap. (An associate ran the numbers and it would equate to around $2 - 5 each)
This is an issue of hunger. Of human rights. Of camaraderie and famine in the year 12 cohort. If you care about the right of hungry students such as the formerly mentioned, Emily Knott, then please, I IMPLORE YOU! Consider these demands.
Kind Regards on behalf of the year 12 cohort,
Zoe Costaras
