The Province of Manitoba’s “Restoring Safe Schools” plan for grade 9-12 students is not practical and does not serve our children’s best interest. The governments plan states that the best place for students in September is in the classroom, yet with respect to grade 9 to 12 students, the plan has indicated that at minimum students will have to attend only two (2) days out of a six (6) day cycle. The plan states that these students may return for up to five (5) days per week of in-class instruction only if high schools can effectively implement physical distancing and the use of cohorts to reduce the risk of transmission and to ensure documentation for contact tracing. This strategy leaves more questions than answers for parents. When will we in fact know how our children’s school schedule will play out? How does this plan affect parents who must make important decisions with respect to careers and scheduling in order to accommodate remote learning?

For many students remote learning is not practical and is detrimental to their educational development. Many students rely on a structured Classroom environment to excel. Remote learning risks the development of our children and reduces accountability for both students and teachers.  Structured High school classes are imperative in order to prepare our kids for University or other post secondary education or vocational programs. Structured classes assist students in developing good personal habits conducive to learning, being productive and securing part time employment opportunities. Remote learning risks developing poor habits in this regard.

The Province of Manitoba has had five (5) months to develop a strategy to deal with this and has just released a general plan instead of a formal strategy.  Our School Divisions and administrators now only have approximately four (4) weeks to implement a strategy which leaves parents no time to plan. Teachers are not even aware as to what the upcoming school year will look like.

Our children need to be in the classroom as close to full time as safely possible, not a few days a week. If Day care facilities and workers have operated throughout the pandemic, why can’t our schools?  Please sign this petition if you support our High School students  attending school more than just the minimum two (2) days out of a six (6) day cycle.
