Put the advisory in extended advisory

Put the advisory in extended advisory

It was all a normal morning in November, as Year 9s streamed into the lower gym for comm time. They patiently listened (most of them) to announcements. Then, the announcement struck, unexpected. “For the following extended advisory, we will be watching the movie “Wonder” as a whole, to fit our theme of inclusion.” Gasps of wonder and confusion exploded throughout the children. Even days later, those students aren’t exactly overjoyed.
I wish to say here, extended advisory, firstly should be about Advisory. Sure, we’re watching a movie, but when 150 people are sitting together for 2 hours, it really just feels like extended comm time. I personally usually expect extended advisory to be lots of fun and freedom of choice, comparable to a advisory party. The choice is yours, and the Advisory gets to choose what they do, should it be going to trampoline parks or visiting a museum . After all, it is something that only occurs twice a year.
Now, i’m not discriminating our theme of inclusion, nor am i insulting the movie of “Wonder”. Inclusion should definitely be an important issue, not just in out year, but all along life, in all places and all social groups. However despite that, I do think more attention should be given to the advisory part in Extended Advisory.
Honestly I think it is all to late. It’s too rushed to re-organise an event now, and also perhaps rude to the people who organised the viewing of “Wonder” too. Well, hopefully next time we receive more attention to the freedom we should have to select and design our own extended advisory trip. Thank you.
