Cancel SMU Classes on Wednesday, October 4th Due to the Evacuation

After the forced evacuation of thousands of students from their residential commons with only approximately 30 minutes notice, it is reasonable request by the student body for classes to be cancelled. Many students have midterms tomorrow and have now been displaced with nowhere to go (seeing as the only housing the University has provided is a limited first come first serve Church, and is not reimbursing students who must go to hotels). Students cannot properly prepare for their exams, projects, and presentations. Many don't have access to internet or a study location (libraries), and if they do they have missed hours of study time. They have been subject to a high stress situation that will further affect their ability to study and sleep. Once students find somewhere to sleep, they have to coordinate transportation to and from the school tonight and tomorrow. By not canceling classes the University is setting up a significant number of its student body to fail. Do not punish your students further by causing them to make poorer grades than they would have otherwise because of the University's mistake. Even if/when the power comes back on tonight you have damaged students' ability to perform tomorrow. Students have already evacuated for the night, and the power returning and allowing students to come back to their rooms does not equate to the incident being made up for. In the academic interest of your students, cancel class tomorrow, Wednesday October 4th at SMU.
