Thousands of cats and dogs have been brutally tortured and slaughtered at the annual Yulin Festival despite government promises to end the practice which has been condemned internationally on grounds of animal cruelty. Besides Yulin cats and dogs are also eated in parts of the China during the whole year. According to Ian Gallagher, In China, cats are reared for one reason: to be devoured at restaurants by customers who pride themselves on their exotic tastes. In some cases, the wretched creatures spend up to two months squeezed 25 at a time inside cages which measure just 2ft by 3ft. Such cruelty - inconceivable in the West - is becoming increasingly commonplace in China. The traders are unmoved by the animals' obvious distress.

Cathryn Gribben has studied the cruelty cases in Guandong. She writes that cruelty against cats is increasing in Guandong, China, where over 10,000 domesticated cats are eaten daily. The cats, some of which are apparently being stolen from people’s houses, are transported in small cages to torestaurants where they are then cooked, often while they are still alive. At the Han River Dog Meat Restaurant in central Guangzhou, diners can choose from a long list of menu items. The Chinese believe that the more they torture the poor creature- cat or dog- and make it endure pain, the better tasting it is. According to Emily Chang dog meat is believed to be good for health and metabolism, and in the summer it is thought to help people sweat. The Chinese also have a deep-seated superstition that eating cat meat can cure asthma, or improve sexual potency. This is totally irrational, no harmless animal should be treated in a cruel manner. Besides of eating cats and dogs, the Chinese use the animals for their fur. The fur products are often sold to the West as ”fake fur.” Animals are usually skinned alive for pure cruelty.

Cats are often claimed to be loners who does not care about the company and who have no emotions. That is misconsemption. According to Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson cats are nothing but emotion. They are sensitive animals who enjoy of the friendly company, and respond to the kindness with kindness. People often think about animals only fron the point of view of their own selfish interests. Chinese are well aware of that the cats are able to feel emotions such as fear and pain, and they want to increase those emotions only for superstiotional, evil and self-serving intentions. There is plenty of truthful proofs about the benefits of treating animals well. When animals are well treated by humans, the relationship with them can be symbiotic. Mossaieff Masson knows many stories about the benefits of the purring of the cats. Cats purr happily when they are tenderly cherished. Micaela Lacy has written that when a cat purrs within a range of 20-140 Hertz, nearby humans may be therapeutically benefiting from these vibrations. Purring has been linked to lowering stress, decreasing symptoms of Dyspnoea, lessening the chances of having a heart attack, and even strengthening bones. Dogs can help people in several ways, for examle by aiding physically impaired people. Nothing good comes up of mistreating animals, but so much joy could come up of the peaceful and friendly coexintence with animals.

Torturing should not exist in a civilized world. If people think they have a right to torture animals and benefit from the suffering of them, people are nothing more than parasites. As the philosopher Peter Singer writes in his essay All the Animals are Equal, if the creature suffers, it can not be morally justified not to take his/her suffering into account. If the borderline to dismiss someone's interests was anything else but sentience,(the ability to suffer or the ability to feel pleasure) that would be despotism. We who have signed the petition, demand the end of cruelty to cats and dogs in China.
