With the recent problems with lead exposure in the water, students remain wary of drinking from public fountains. Similarly, water fountains are often never cleaned properly. This can lead to the purchase of bottled water at lunch, which in turns increases plastic waste which is detrimental for the environment.
Installing a water bottle refill station solves a number of issues. It reduces plastic consumption because students are more likely to fill their preexisting water bottles. Most importantly, these stations often include filters that clean the water of any impurities, including lead; these stations are also much more hygienic than conventional water fountains.
Catching up to the neighboring school districts of Newport and Portsmouth, Middletown Public Schools should find a way to install these machines in every school possible, paving the way towards a cleaner and greener future.
