A decision has been made to change the Maylands Peninsula Primary School polo shirt design to include the four house colours. This means students' everyday uniform shirts will be branded with red, blue, green or yellow stripes down the sides (pictured above). The new shirts (costing about $24.50 each) will be available for purchase at the end of 2021, and fully phased-in by 2023.

If this were to happen, the new shirts will be much harder to replicate with more affordable options, such as plain polo shirts starting at just $2 from Kmart, or $2 secondhand shirts. Not all families will be able to afford the new shirts and kids without them may stand out as economically disadvantaged.

The change may also mean old shirts are discarded with no re-use value. With 667 students at the school, up to 3,335 shirts could go to landfill. The cotton material of the old shirts will also be replaced with synthetic material. This goes against the environmentally sustainable initiatives by the school that we are trying to teach our children.

From a cultural perspective, having our children sorted into groups at all times with constant visual reminders will encourage division. While a bit of healthy competition and team spirit is OK during a faction carnival, how will this play out in the playground? Always organising people by "colour" is not a habit we want to encourage in our children. Nor is rewarding house points (as opposed to individual rewards) for good behaviour the most effective behaviour management strategy.

At Maylands Peninsula Primary School, we pride ourselves in our incredible diversity and culture of inclusion. Our motto is "learning together" as one, not dividing and competing against each other. Let's please keep our shirts as-is.
