My Mum died of Dementia. For two years she was frightened, confused and anxious and lonely. On her visits to the consultant she asked that she may die. To all the social services she asked to die. Even with support in, these feelings could not be taken away, she would forget who had visited so the loneliness continued, she could not see the television, noises frightened her, she could not prepare her meals or make it to the toilet in time. Life for my Mum was an endless terror. I watched my Mum die, she stopped eating and drinking, I watched her skin dry and shrink away until she looked like a mummy and I watch her pain and I was with her until she took her last breath.
I have just put my dog down who also had dementia, he was taken to the vets with all his family, he was cuddled on my daughters lap and gently given an injection where he just slipped away in my daughters arms. It was done with such dignity and much love and not once did my dog display any signs of distress.
Out of the two methods of death which one would you prefer?
It is torture to allow a person with no quality of life to live on. My Mum had 2 years where she was in hell, why do we as a nation allow this to continue?
As a country we have an escalating social service bill to fund yet we continue to care for people who want to die and who have no quality of life. It is time to change the law and look to our European examples of assisted deaths. Give back the dignity to our loved ones, allow them to be at peace and take away the pain, confusion, frustration and fear.
Please support this campaign and lets raise the flag for decency and understanding but above all humanity.
