For those who are new, here's a summary of the situation: for years at QASMT, LGBTQIA+ students have not felt properly supported or heard. While the recent Pride event was a step in the right direction, many students feel it is not appropriate without an acknowledgement of past failures and a concrete commitment to improvement.

Issues at QASMT involved: lack of uniform policy to support trans and gender diverse (TGD) students; a consistent refusal to hold pride events or publicly support LGBT students; problematic sex education programs (some of which promoted an abstinence-only approach); and a poor response to student concerns in regards to bullying and the lack of support and transparency from QASMT, including when those concerns were raised by student leaders.

Many LGBT students across several cohorts feel impacted by these negative experiences and want to ensure no further cohorts are impacted in the same way.

Therefore, we are challenging QASMT upper admin staff to better reflect the IB learner attributes by proving they can be more reflective of their own actions, open-minded, caring, principled, and better communicators. We want to see these changes happen through three main demands.

1. A formal apology to previous students for the hurt caused by the lack of support and transparency, which does not shirk blame onto the students.

2. A commitment to inclusive, comprehensive, and sex-positive sex education.

3. A statement of intention to how policies will change to explicitly protect LGBTQIA+ students. Suggestions include formalising a nonbinary uniform, updating senior jersey protocol for trans students, committing to future Pride events, mandating diversity training for admin staff, and protecting LGBT+ students from discrimination on school grounds.

We feel these demands are logical and achievable and hope that there is a timely response from QASMT that proves they really are Queensland's best state high school.
