St. Andrews Private School is developing a new private school in Aurora for girls, and have decided to name it St. Annes. St. Annes is the name of a residential school that operated on Fort Albany First Nation in Ottawa. St. Annes residential school was operating from 1902-1976, and was the sight of a notorious investigation which for many years the Canadian government hid from the public.

The school narrative is a key piece of evidence into the realities these residential school survivors faced, and the trauma our indigenous community members had to endure. The investigation into St. Annes residential school revealed the horrific and overwhelming evidence that the children faced numerous counts of abuse and torture.

The horrors at this school, which was funded by the Catholic oblates of Mary Immaculate (the same responsible for Kamloops residential school) the Grey Sisters of the cross, and the Canadian Government was largely hidden from the media, including convictions, until a ruling in 2014 forced Harper government to disclose the OPP files and documents from a civil action in Cochrane to St. Annes survivors. The number of files uncovered grew exponentially, and the findings are absolutely devastating.

Tied down with straight jackets, shocked in electric chairs, raped, beaten, forced to eat rotten food and their own vomit, and much more. The trauma these innocent children faced will have you sick to your stomach.

In light of the new movement which has sparked investigations across the country on former residential school locations, unmarked graves are being exposed and the children's bodies will finally be sent home where they belong. People are starting to talk about the systemic oppression and cultural genocide the indigenous are still facing. It is time to make real change towards truth & reconciliation.

I call on my fellow Ally’s to force this namesake to be changed and shunned. Numerous bodies continue to be dug up on many residential school sites, we are ally’s of the indigenous community and must emanate that. We cannot allow a school in our home town to be named after such a horrible part of Canadian history.
