Siena Castellon started this petition to MP Damian Hinds (Education Secretary) and

Approximately 1.5 million young people in the United Kingdom were bullied at school in 2018. Bullying ruins lives. Bullying has a devastating effect on the mental, emotional and physical wellbeing of young people. More than 40% of school children who are bullied report having suicidal thoughts and 39% report having self-harmed. Every year, about 200 school children die by suicide in the United Kingdom, many because they were bullied.

Bullying also jeopardises school children’s education. In fact, thousands of parents are removing their school children from school midway through the academic year, because of severe bullying. In 2018, approximately 12,000 school children were forced to move school so that they could be safe and free from abuse.

It is clear that schools are failing to take bullying seriously. Schools often ignore or deny that bullying is occurring. They also frequently fail to follow and enforce their anti-bullying policies. Their lack of action, helps to create an environment in which bullying behaviour is normalised. This explains why over 50% of all school children report being bullied.

Sadly, autistic students and students with learning differences are preyed upon the most. Approximately 75% of autistic students report being bullied and 70% of students with learning differences report being bullied. Many of these students are so traumatised by the abuse that they develop bullying-related PTSD and severe anxiety that prevents them from being able to go to school. As a consequence, many SEN students are forced into home-education.

I am one of these students. I am a sixteen year old student who is autistic, dyslexic, dyspraxic and has ADHD. I have been bullied at school for most of my life. In most instances, my school blamed me for being different and for not trying hard enough to “fit in.” My schools also denied that I was being bullied, which meant that the bullying escalated. As a consequence, I have had to change school three times. This had a devastating effect on my confidence, self-esteem and sense of self-worth. The upheaval also jeopardised my education. Whereas I had to uproot my life and had to cope with the trauma of being abused by my bullies and let down by my school, my bullies were never held accountable for their actions. My bullies were free to continue to target and destroy the life of another vulnerable student.

I am starting this petition to demand that the Department for Education require all schools to log each bullying incident in a school registry that will be sent to Ofsted on an annual basis. Requiring schools to keep a record of each bullying complaint, will prevent schools from continuing to sweep the problem under the carpet and will incentivise schools to take the action necessary to prevent and stop school bullying.

If your child has ever been bullied or if you believe that every child has the right to feel safe at school and to be free from physical and verbal abuse, please sign this petition. Together, we have the power to make a difference so that future generations of school children do not have traumatic school experiences that scar them forever.
