Move the International Tchaikovsy Competition out of Russia
Why this petition matters
The International Tchaikovsky Competition is among the foremost classical music competitions for pianists, violinists, and cellists. It is named after the noted Russian composer Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky. Winning, and even placing, in this competition has launched the careers of many famous musicians worldwide. However, Russia does not own Tchaikovsky's legacy and should not be allowed to tarnish his name. In fact, the American pianist Van Cliburn won the inaugural competition in 1958 at the height of the Cold War. After the criminal actions of Russia in Ukraine, a competition held in Russian territory will have few willing participants, as most musicians are sensitive to the suffering of others and will no longer trust this platform to launch their careers. Please join me in an effort to sanction Russia by moving the Tchaikovsky Competition off of Russian soil to a new location, perhaps in the EU or the US. An effective campaign would have participants campaign their national governments to work with other nations to find a new, permanent home for this event.
