The looming construction of a Traction Power Substation in our beloved Yarralumla neighborhood is a cause for deep concern, especially for families like mine who live just across the street from the proposed site. The thought of having my grandchildren, who often play outside with their friends, near such a high-voltage installation is alarming. The safety and well-being of our children should be a top priority, and I believe this project threatens just that.

In addition to personal safety concerns, there are legitimate operational risks associated with placing such infrastructure in the midst of a residential area. The substation will generate constant noise, a hum that disrupts the peace of our community, and its presence will invariably affect property values. There are also potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to electromagnetic fields that cannot be overlooked.

There are also significant environmental concerns with four endangered and protected species; the Golden Sun Moth, Gang-gang cockatoo, Superb Parrot, and Diamond Firetail, whose shared habitat and breeding grounds will be decimated at development location.

Moreover, situating the substation away from homes is not an unreasonable request. There is ample undeveloped land in areas that would not compromise the safety and tranquility of our community. By relocating the substation, the Light Rail Project can still proceed without sacrificing the quality of life for residents.

This petition seeks to urge local authorities and project planners to reconsider the siting of the Traction Power Substation, taking into account both safety and operational concerns voiced by the community. The objective is simple: find a more suitable location that preserves the character and safety of Yarralumla.
