This Saturday, May 7th, is projected to be the hottest day of the year to date at 103°F. It may even be classified as "Dangerously Hot" by The National Weather Service. Graduation is currently planned to take place on Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium. Here's how the hot and sunny weather may make the ceremony dangerous:
- According to The National Weather Service, a heat index of 103°F - 124°F is Dangerous, warning that "Heat cramps or heat exhaustion likely, and heat stroke possible with prolonged exposure and/or physical activity"
- "Penn State University’s Center for Sports Surface Research conducted studies comparing surface temperatures of synthetic turfs composed of various fiber and infill colors/materials and found that the maximum surface temperatures during hot, sunny conditions averaged from 140° F to 170° F." To summarize, the ambient heat on the astroturf will be higher than the projected 103°F.
- Graduates will be wearing temperature retaining black robes. Heat related concerns are increased for those who have heart conditions, take certain medications, or are obese. These are serious and legitimate health concerns related to relative heat and dry climates.
Considering these factors, hosting graduation outdoors poses real health concerns. As of right now, there has been no communication whether Abilene Christian University plans to move the graduation ceremony. To ensure the safety of the ACU community, graduation must change time and/or location. Protect students and families by signing this petition for ACU to move graduation.
