Maintain Weekly Garbage Collection in Mountain View

The Mountain View City Council is considering reducing garbage collection to every other week and will vote on the matter at the Council meeting on December 13th. We, the undersigned, encourage the Council to reject this proposal and maintain weekly trash collection.
Mountain View has been piloting changes to trash pickup to determine an acceptable method of diverting waste from the landfill. A survey run by the City found that a majority of pilot participants were dissatisfied with every-other-week garbage collection.
Municipal garbage collection is a basic sanitation issue. With the proposed changes, pet waste, diapers and other trash would fester for up to two weeks! That will result in odors, flies and other pests.
We recognize the need to reduce the amount of waste in our landfills. Composting more waste is a viable means to reach this goal. However, collecting food scraps for composting does not require reducing garbage collection to every-other-week. Many other cities in the Bay Area (including Menlo Park and San Francisco) are collecting both garbage and organics for compost every week. Mountain View should explore this and other options that do not reduce garbage collection frequency.
