No More Culminating Project

Every year, in order to graduate, every senior at Mount Vernon High School has to complete a Culminating project.
I am hoping to have this requirement change. There are students who have other responsibilities than to complete a project that most times doesn't benefit us.
After talking to some current seniors, they said that the Culminating Project was something they put off until last minute. High schoolers will only do that if they think what they're doing is unimportant.
As a requirement, students must show personal growth. "Completing and passing the CP is required for graduation because it helps you practice the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful after graduation". Shouldn't we be learning those skills and practicing them during school?
While I understand that our school believes this will help us in our search to our future careers or simply making connections in our community, many of our own teachers did not have to do this project when they went to high school and they aren't much of a help when it comes to resources. Also, in our communtiy there are limited jobs that we can cover if we don't have connections.
As an incoming senior, I believe that the culminating project should not be rid of fully but instead become optional or find some other way to allow us to show these skills during school hours.
