Alannah Batho started this petition to Mornington Peninsula Shire and

One of the beautiful beaches in Mornington, Shire Hall Beach, is rapidly eroding. And it is not from natural causes. The erosion is caused by the wavescreen on Mornington Pier, which was built to help protect the boats moored in Mornington Harbour during storms.

Shire Hall Beach is just to the east of Mother's Beach. Over the last 10 years, the sand has been rapidly drifting away, and the beach has become extremely rocky, narrow and dirty. It used to be a beautiful, family swimming beach but is quickly becoming unsafe and unenjoyable. Families have to dig trenches through all the rocks to be able to go for a swim. The beachboxes are becoming unsafe to use, because they are now sitting high above the sand. A local woman recently broke her leg, just by stepping down onto the sand from one of the beachboxes.

The cause of the erosion is the installation of the wavescreen on Mornington Pier. While the wavescreen has helped to protect some of the boats that are moored in the harbour during storm events, it has caused the destruction of a beautiful local beach.

The Mornington Shire Council, Parks Victoria and DELWP knew that the wavescreen would cause Shire Hall Beach to erode.

An Environment Effects Statement was published in April 2010 which clearly states that an impact of installation of a wavescreen on Mornington Pier would be erosion of Shire Hall Beach. A State Government Inquiry Report published in 2011 states that "Key tenets from the Inquiry's hearings are...[t]hat coastal processes will change as a result of the wavescreens and reduction of wave action. Changes will be evident through an increase in beach erosion from Shire Hall Beach...".

Many local people, as well as the Mornington Environment Association, have tried to engage with the Mornington Shire Council, Parks Victoria and DELWP about the degradation of Shire Hall Beach, caused by the wavescreen. They have been stone-walled at every turn. None of these bodies is willing to take responsibility.

Why won't these bodies, which are supposed to look after our environment and our local community, protect our beaches? They are happy to help stop some boats from getting damaged during the odd storm (presumably covered by insurance in any case) but they don't care about the loss of our natural environment? It's no longer okay to ruin the natural environment and just get away with it.

It is time for the community to take matters into our own hands. We want the Mornington Shire Council, Parks Victoria and DELWP to stop the erosion of Shire Hall and restore this once-beautiful beach.

Sign this petition to save Shire Hall Beach, one of our once-beautiful, local beaches.
