Mandy White started this petition to Mornington Peninsula Residents

The Mornington Peninsula, which has zero COVID-19 cases (as of Sept 12), and hasn’t had an active case for 14 days, has been forced into lockdown with the rest of Melbourne, while across the bay, other regional areas such as, Lorne, Torquay and Geelong have escaped restrictions and been allowed to help their local businesses and economy start to recover from the financial strain of the lockdown.

Typically classified as a regional economy, the Mornington Peninsula isn’t classified as Metro Melbourne when it comes to infrastructure spending by the Victorian Government, however for COVID-19 restrictions it has been clumsily lumped into this category.

Research shows there’s been in excess of 6,000 job losses on the peninsula, and a 21% fall in Gross Regional Product (compared with a 6.9% drop for Australia) and an 11% drop in employment opportunities across the region. The Mornington Peninsula economy has been hit exceptionally hard as a result of the lockdown.

With the Peninsulas proven ability to manage local COVID-19 cases, the fact Geelong has been excluded from metro Melbourne restrictions and so many unique shops, retailers, vineyards, restaurants, farm gates, fresh food suppliers and small businesses that could be being supported by Mornington Peninsula residents to help start building up our local economy again, a bit of common sense is desperately needed from the Victorian government, to reclassify the Mornington Peninsula as regional, allowing us locals to start our rebuild and support our local businesses and economy.

Please sign this petition to encourage the Victorian Government to reclassify the Mornington Peninsula and exclude it from metro Melbourne.
