Allow the proposed telecommunications tower installation at Crimea Reserve, Bayswater

For too long now, the people of Morley have been living in a nightmare of incredibly poor mobile reception and atrociously slow ADSL internet speeds. Time and time again we have heard that things will improve, and yet still we are unable to do so much as send and receive text messages in our home. Our quality of life is being affected through loss of communication with our loved ones, and the feeling of social isolation in the modern world. Furthermore, with the NBN not scheduled to arrive in this small patch of Morley until late 2019, a reliable mobile connection is our last hope to escape these dark times.

Around 18 months ago the City of Bayswater voted to disapprove the installation of a 20 metre high telecommunications tower in Crimea Reserve. This tower would have also housed equipment for Vodafone and two other providers (likely Optus and Telstra), and therefore benefitted all mobile users. Common sense prevailed and the State Administrative Tribunal overruled the council's decision, however, unfortunately both the City of Bayswater and some residents are still actively opposing this tower's installation. Their latest attempt is to convince the state government that the SAT should not have the power to overrule council decisions.

I urge you to show your support for this project as the benefits are far reaching. Not only will this ease slow speeds and cellular congestion on surrounding towers, the rent paid by these telecommunications companies will directly benefit the City of Bayswater and its residents. We cannot let unfounded fears of radiation and progress continue to genuinely hinder the quality of life for those whom the tower would be a godsend.

I urge the City of Bayswater, the MLA for Morley, and the Legislative Council of Western Australia to do the following:

  • Immediately halt all actions that are delaying the installation of the proposed Vodafone Hutchinson telecommunications tower at Crimea Reserve, and reject all proposals for amendments to the powers of the State Administrative Tribunal on local government issues
  • Consider the benefits to all members of this community the tower would bring, and the negative effects continued protest will cause
  • Complete any and all actions required to expedite the installation and activation of this proposed tower.
