Moreland Council will rename itself in 2022.

The name Moreland was taken from a Jamaican plantation worked by enslaved people. That's kinda shitty, but it also doesn't have any meaning connection to this pocket of the Earth. Seems like a fairly average choice, when you think about it..

The good news is that Council will work with Wurundjeri community leaders to choose a new name that is unique, and unmistakably Australian.

I believe that when the rebrand happens, they should also begin to include Traditional Place Names in all their addresses, signage, and postal material.

This should include rebranded stationery and letterheads etc, building signage, all outgoing mail to ratepayers etc, as well as including the appropriate First Nations' Country on outgoing mail to those who don’t live on Wurundjeri Country.

This change has already been implemented at a Federal level with AusPost's recent changes to their address policy and packaging. Why shouldn't a progressive Council get on board as well?

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Moreland to once again show leadership on matters that impact First Nations peoples, and help foster an honest and reconciled identity for all its citizens.

If you live in Moreland, this is the time for us to show we're not afraid of making bold decisions in line with our shared values of community and mateship.

If you live somewhere else, this could be the nudge your Council needs to acknowledge First Nations' in their everyday dealings.

We need to make this happen. Please sign and share this petition.

Also please email, tweet, Snap-Send-Solve (maybe?), call, or write to Moreland Council, or your local Councillor.
