Johanna Tracey started this petition to Moreland City Council

We petition Moreland Council to amend their plan to restrict parking to 2 hours, around public transport stations and tram stops, and allow adequate parking, to ensure better protection for women and other vulnerable people who need to drive to and from public transport points.

Women are regularly harassed and sometimes attacked when walking home after dark. We all remember several brutal and highly publicised cases in the area that have resulted in dire circumstances.

Warnings are posited about staying safe and not walking alone, but Council's planned changes that discourage parking around public transport stations and stops will put people at risk and create easy targets for dangerous people.

Once out of sight of the Transit Police, women are on their own.The 2P restrictions untill 11 pm put women at risk. Women using public transport do not feel safe walking home alone after dark through poorly lit and deserted streets in order to get home. Cars parked near stops and stations ensure we are safer able to get home safely.

Discouraging people from parking near public transport means women and vulnerable people are forced to take their cars to their destinations - forgoing public transport entirely. The proposed Council changes, rather than promoting healthy travel options such as walking to public transport, force women to choose their personal safety over other values such as environment climate change, sustainability or cost.
