Ruby Bayley-Pratt started this petition to Moray Council

Women’s Aid Moray have received consistent cuts to their funding over the last few years. Now, the Moray Council are proposing to cut a further £32,000 from its funding. This will mean the withdrawal of its overnight helpline and a reduction in support hours. The council are meeting THIS TUESDAY (March 3rd) to approve. We have to act fast.

Three women a week in the UK are killed by a current or former partner. And that number is increasing. Between 2018 and 2019, it rose by 27%. That's without even taking into consideration financial and emotional abuse, or those women who don't come forward. This increase is reflected in how many women Women's Aid Moray supported during that period too. Only in January it was reported on that use of services rose 25%. In what world can a case be made to deprioritise funding this work?

Moreover, it’s clear the council has no real understanding or expertise around domestic violence. Aside from the moral argument, it is well-evidenced that in the long-term, investment in domestic violence services and prevention has wider positive outcomes. You save on health and criminal justice costs and more people (mainly women) are able to participate as part of the workforce and more effectively, benefitting the economy.

We urge Moray Council to reconsider this short-sighted and morally void proposal. Is this really what you stand for?
