Grampian Furnishers are a long established family run local business founded in Elgin back in 1975, currently based in an old cinema in Lossiemouth.
The long term future of the business depends on the planning application being granted for a £3.5m investment that is hoped will create up to 50 jobs by moving the business 6 miles to a purpose built building on the edge of Elgin that will be 3 times the size of the existing premises. The application goes against the current local plan as the proposed site has been zoned for industrial use, however this site is unique as it sits at the gateway to Elgin and the high quality landmark building would replace the current derelict buildings on site. It would not be another retail park or area, purely a stand alone destination outlet with a cafe, over 100 car parking spaces, be connected to the cycle path network and also be accessed by 2 bus stops nearby.
After spending 2 years looking for an existing building or land in or around the town centre it became clear that the only viable option was to purpose build a new high quality building on the outskirts of the town. Consultation with all relevant parties has taken place and there have been 3 objections, Anderson & England (owned by national chain sterling furniture who are a competitor) Elgin BID and one individual. The main objector Elgin BID feel this £3.5m investment will have a negative impact on the Elgin town centre even although they agreed with us there were no suitable buildings or land in the town centre available for the proposed new store, a planning specialist has since demonstrated there will be no negative impact on the town centre. Common sense would suggest that attracting more people into the area can only have a positive impact on other businesses in the area which includes the Elgin town centre.
I ask that you show your support for this significant £3.5m investment by my local family run business into the Moray economy, creating jobs during and after construction, reducing leakage to Inverness and Aberdeen as well as attracting people into the area. I feel that the landmark building and business will be an asset to the area and show that Elgin is open for business ! The Moray Council planning committee are due to vote on this application in the coming weeks so if I can show them the people of Moray really want and need this new store it may go a long way to helping me make this happen.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to sign this,
