Senior 2020 MHS started this petition to Mooresville High School Administrators and

The Mooresville High School Senior Class of 2020 was recently informed of a major change to the layout of the senior portrait pages in the Pitchfork Yearbook. We were told that senior quotes were being replaced by "informal photos", selected by us, that would appear, slightly smaller, next to our formal portraits. A picture of this new layout was posted to the Pitchfork Instagram (@pitchfork.yearbook) on August 14th, 2019. However, the senior students are highly upset with this change for multiple reasons.

Senior quotes are a Mooresville High School tradition and privilege that has been given to many graduating classes before us. Both of my older siblings (CO'16 and CO'18) got to chose their quotes. Because of this, the MHS Class of 2020 has been looking forward to seeing our personally selected quotes appearing in our last yearbook. The first thing that everyone does when receiving their yearbook is flip through and read the senior quotes. It has become a tradition for not only MHS students but seniors across the United States. It is unfair that the option to pick a senior quote has been taken away from us at the last minute and replaced by an informal photo. Like many of my fellow seniors, I had already been thinking about my senior quote and had even selected one that I wanted to use.

Additionally, many seniors have professional informal photographs taken to use on their graduation announcements and for the Senior Ads. These will most likely be the photos selected for the "informal photos" in the yearbook. This puts students who cannot afford professional photographs at a disadvantage because they will have to submit unprofessional photographs of themselves. Even if students did not want to submit a photo, they don't have the option to opt-out. In an email sent to students on August 26th, 2019, we were informed that "If no appropriate photo is submitted, a yearbook photographer will find you and take an informal photo for the book!" What constitutes an "appropriate photo" and why must every student submit one? Senior quotes were optional and voluntary but the "informal photos" are not. Tracking down students during the school day to take a photo of them also seems like an unfair alternative for students because they will be unprepared for it. They won't be wearing the clothing they want and the location of the picture is unknown. Where are they going to take these photos? The hallway?

The new layout (as seen on Instagram) also uses a white background instead of a black one, which has been one of the main differences between senior and underclassman portrait pages in the last five years. It makes the senior pages more unique and sophisticated.

Parents and students are willing to spend a large sum of money in order to obtain their yearbooks and seniors look forward to having their senior quotes be an important milestone in their high school career. They range from a summation of the high school experience, an inside joke, a hope for the future, to inspirational quotes from a role model.

Senior quotes are important to students and we want the MHS Pitchfork Committee and MHS Administrators to rescind their decision to include "informal photos" instead of senior quotes. If you agree, please sign this petition!
