Make Moorabool Shire a Refugee Welcome Zone!

This petition is an initiative of the Ballan Refugee Realities Project. We are a group of local community residents who are concerned about Australia's increasingly cruel policies regarding Asylum Seekers who arrive by boat to our shores. We aim to raise awareness about the issue and to create a local community which will welcome and support Refugees. Declaring Moorabool Shire a Refugee Welcome Zone is an important step in this process.

A Refugee Welcome Zone is a Local Government Area which has made a commitment in spirit to welcoming refugees into the community, upholding the human rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion for refugees and enhancing cultural and religious diversity in the community. The Refugee Welcome Zone Declaration does not confer any formal obligations and Refugee Welcome Zones are not required to uphold any statutory responsibilities, to make financial commitments or enter into reporting accountabilities. The signing of the Declaration is simply a way of demonstrating broad support for the principles it contains.

There are currently 87 Refugee Welcome Zones in Australia including the neighbouring City of Ballarat and Hepburn Shire Council. Local Government has historically played an important role in assisting refugee settlement and promoting community harmony. Since federation, Australia has become home to over 800,000 refugees and we have a proud history of settling refugees from all over the world who have gone on to make an enormous contribution to our economic, social and cultural wellbeing.
