Please protect the largest prehistorical site in the world from becoming a Lego Land!
Why this petition matters
Jungdo island, located in Chuncheon, South Korea, was famous since the 70s as an archaeological site where remains from the bronze age, to Gojoseon dynasty, and to Goguryeo dynasty. Although the government never did an official excavation on on the site, accidental discoveries raised the site's reputation. But then, in 2015, the South Korean government and an english company called "Merlin" signed a contract to construct a lego land theme park on that site, with an expectancy of two million give hundred thousand tourists every year. Hence, the government excavated the site to see what's underneath, and there, an ancient village more than 3,000 years old with 3,000 dolmens were found. It was the largest bronze age village site in the world. There were also golden earrings of 6th century found on the site, the evidences show that the site has been inhabited continuously for more than at least 1,000 years. Naturally, the government would stop the business that would wipe out the site, and instead, try to register it as a Unesco world heritage site. However, the government decided to continue the business, and started destroying the dolmens. There were civil communities that tried to stop this, and many people sent petitions, but there was no success. The government has come to conclusion that they will preserve only 30 dolmens, which take 1% of the entire number of dolmens on the site. The lego land theme park is thought to be finished next year, and the dolmens are getting destroyed until now.
However, we still have time to stop this. Here are the solutions. First, the government should stop the business with Merlin at all cost. Secondly, they should register the site as an official archaeological site which will then be protected by the laws. Then, thirdly, the government should restore the already displaced dolmens, and finally, they should make, and promote the site as a tourist spot for the profit.
Hence, I beg all of you, to sign this petition that would assure the protection of the largest prehistoric site in the world. There were many petitions in the past, but all have failed due to the lack of interest and consciousness. We are more desperate than ever. This site isn't only a national heritage of South Korea, it is a heritage of all humanity, and can change world history. The dolmen style observed here is a unique style that doesn't appear anywhere else, and some historians think that this site proves that Chuncheon along side it's area was territory of Gojoseon. And for sure, this site tells us a lot about the life of ancient civilisations, and those before them. Thank you for your attention.
