Save the Village Grille

After 16 years of business, The Village Grille may be forced to shut down. Our landlords, the Montgomery Youth Hockey Association (MYHA) board of directors have filed against us in district court for nonpayment of rent during the pandemic and repossession.

We want it to be known, to everyone, especially the MYHA families, and Rockville Ice Arena skaters, that we’ve been treated unfairly, and in the opinion of some, unethically by the board over the past two years, before the pandemic began.

Timeline:

  • Summer 2019, our landlord (MYHA board of directors), told us that we would need to leave at the end of our lease (December 31st 2019), not understanding that we had already signed on for another 5 years (January 2020 – December 2024). After hiring a lawyer, they were made to understand that we did, in fact, have another 5 years on our lease.
  • Soon after this (November 2019), we received another eviction letter due to the fact that we did not sign onto a one-sided amended lease that would benefit MYHA and would be devastating for us. Our lawyer advised us that we were not obligated to sign this.
  • At the beginning of the pandemic (March 2020), we were forced to shut down and had to lay off all of our staff, some of whom we’ve worked with even before the Village Grille existed. When the Rockville Ice Arena was able to open again at limited capacity, The Village Grille was still advertised as closed by the rink on social media and their website.
  • We paid March and April’s rent while having no insight into when the rink would be fully functioning and when we could safely reopen again.

Never, in all the time we’ve run the Village Grille, have we paid a day late in rent. Our livelihood was taken away from us, so we asked for some semblance of rent relief for the duration of the lockdown. In response, we were told through their lawyer that they’d only provide a few months of rent relief if the Village Grille agreed to that amended lease which was unsustainable and unfair to us.

We believe that our customers, composed largely of MYHA families, know nothing about the board’s unfair treatment even prior to the pandemic. Our court date is scheduled for April 26th, where we may be forced to pay back all of the pandemic rent and shut down the Village Grille, leaving us with nothing.

We need your SUPPORT! By signing this petition, you will let the MYHA board know that they cannot take a 16-year-old successful restaurant away for free.

You could sign this petition if you believe that during this pandemic we should HELP each other. Not take away people’s livelihoods when they are down due to something that was of no fault of their own.

Thank you!
