I'm a graduate of Sidney Lanier. This change is long overdue. We need to send a message to the youth of our community. All lives can't matter until BLACK LIVES MATTER.

As a student back in the mid 90’s I always found it ironic that the black students were getting their education by attending schools named after leaders who were in support of keeping black people as slaves which usually meant being uneducated. Keep their statues in a museum and name schools after people who wanted to see people of all races have the opportunity to learn and be successful in life.

Rename these schools. The students that go here should not have to say their names when saying their school.

Naming predominantly Black schools after Confederate generals is and has been a cruel slap in the face. No person should have to see the glorification of people that fought to continue a system that would strip that person of their human rights, and especially not as the name of their school. No child should have to grow up in an environment that explicitly - by the very name of the institution - glorifies their oppressors.

"Welcome to your school! We're named after a person who firmly believed that you are not human, and we can change this name at any time but choose not to. We hope you excel! (:"

I’m a graduate of Lee High School In 1969 and have long wanted to see the name changed. It should not be named for a traitor who lost a war. I suggest Honoring Harper Lee (who was from Alabama) or Shelton Jackson (Spike) Lee from Georgia.
