Don't Narrow Pennsylvania Avenue

Attention Neighbors:

As part of the current sidewalk construction project in Lyttonsville, the County  proposes to narrow Pennsylvania Avenue, between Michigan Avenue and Lanier Drive. The reason given for the proposed narrowing is to meet driveway apron slope standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to accommodate a second new sidewalk across the street from one that was recently completed.

We are greatly concerned that narrowing Pennsylvania Avenue will create dangerous conditions for residents and visitors who drive on the street, school buses (once schools are reopened), RideOn buses, and the numerous construction vehicles working on the Purple Line and new Talbot Avenue bridge.

The existing road width is 27 feet. This is already less than the minimum established design width for the County-designated Primary Residential Street of 30.5 feet, with two travel lanes and one side of on-street parking. Narrowing the street to 24-25 feet will endanger people driving and walking on the street, not to mention your neighbors living on the street itself!

With notification letters sent solely to residents along this one block of Pennsylvania Avenue that arrived on June 29th, the County is accepting comments on the proposed narrowing only until July 10th for this drastic change to our well-used neighborhood street.

Please sign this petition today to tell the County Department of Transportation to abandon their proposal to narrow Pennsylvania Avenue. Time is of the essence!
