Stop the $11 Million Giveaway to Marriott.

We urge the Montgomery County Council to reject the proposed supplemental appropriation to the FY17 Capital Budget of $11 million for the Marriott Corporation. This would be in addition to $12 million in tax benefits already promised by the county. This sort of corporate handout to a Fortune 500 company is unwarranted at any time, but particularly now given recent budget pressures.
The proposed Marriott giveaway would be the second time in less than two decades that Marriott has won huge handouts from the state and local governments in Maryland. In 1999, the state and county gave $43 million to Marriott, one of the largest subsidies ever offered to a Maryland employer. The state and county also fast-tracked road improvements in exchange for Marriott’s commitment to stay in the state and add 700 new jobs.
But the jobs never arrived. Marriott never kept its promise to the government and workers of our County.
In two decades Marriott has received at least $270 million in subsidies from various states and localities and $260 million from the federal government.
Both the state of Maryland and Montgomery County are coming off of years of austerity budgets in which schools, employees and services have faced cuts. This year Montgomery County passed the largest tax increase in eight years. Students in Montgomery County Community Colleges face a five percent tuition increase next year. The County Council has unilaterally cut negotiated wage increases for its employees in half.
Just in the past weeks the state of Maryland has announced further budget cuts that may impact county spending.
Given this austerity being faced by county residents, workers, and taxpayers we feel that this is the worst possible time to be giving a handout to a Fortune 500 company. We urge the County Council to vote no on this proposal.
