Tell the Board of Education to Keep Equity a Priority in Montgomery County

Proposed in the FY2019 budget for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is the elimination of 1 director and 11 instructional specialist positions from the Department of Professional Learning and Equity Initiatives—the department tasked with building the capacity of MCPS staff to close the racial achievement gap and eliminate racial predictability in student achievement.
These instructional specialists, along with 9 whom the proposed budget would spare from elimination, provide dedicated support to all 204 schools.
Cutting the staff in more than half would be a gigantic step backwards in MCPS’s work to reduce the opportunity gap. We cannot let that happen.
The proposed elimination of positions is part of the current plan for realignment and decentralization. While this strategy has many benefits, the loss of a centralized team and the reduction in instructional specialists will only decrease support for teachers and diminish MCPS’s ability to serve its most impacted students effectively.
The proposed elimination would:
- stifle professional learning for all MCPS staff,
- interrupt the ongoing work of equity and cultural proficiency,
- sever the relationships and good will with schools, and
- negatively impact our traditionally underserved communities.
Instead of eliminating these valuable positions, we ask that all 11 instructional specialist positions be reinstated to work within the new alignment under the Office of School Support and Improvement.
This will ensure the equity and cultural proficiency work will continue without an implementation dip, protect the authentic relationships that have been forged between the specialists and the schools they support, and operate with respect to the new vertical alignment under Dr. Smith’s vision.
Please join us in asking the Board of Education to change the proposed budget to reflect the reinstatement of all 11 instructional specialist positions so all students in Montgomery County have access to success.
