MCPS must increase mental health awareness.

As one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, the lack of resources and support systems available to students within the Montgomery County Public School system is unacceptable. The staff and administration are not adequately trained to recognize and act upon the warning signs of depression and suicide. Instead, many are focused on maintaining the high ranks and academic standards of the county. With this mindset comes an intense workload and immense pressure on students, who feel as though their “failure” is disgraceful. We need thorough training of employees within the school system to ensure that they know and act upon the signs of suicide. We need the creation of a nurturing and accepting school environment, where students are taught to be decent and caring human beings and teachers are taught to help their students thrive, not bring them down. We need proper counseling and therapy in schools to provide professional help for students who cannot access this by their own means. We need a better MCPS.
