Dear Montclair High School Administration,

On Thursday, April second, Montclair High School’s senior class received the information that the Career Internship Program had been terminated due to COVID-19. For many of us, CIP was going to be the culmination of our four years, where we would gain vital real-world experience before starting the next phase of our lives, using what we have learned at MHS to guide us. Understandably, the real world we have begun to experience over the past several weeks has been one of immense change– we have adapted to online classes, made the most of our situations, and mourned time lost with our community that we will never get back. We are watching milestones disappear right before us, and despite the incredible efforts made thus far by MHS administration and teachers, we feel quite helpless. It is for this reason that, on behalf of the class of 2020, we respectfully ask for your consideration to preserve CIP in any way we can.

We have learned through the necessary switch to virtual education that moving school  online is very much achievable. Now that our whole lives have moved online, it is more important than ever that CIP, a program centered around gaining life experience, is able to adapt to reflect the same opportunities given to other Senior classes. Additionally, we believe that it is beneficial to our growth as a student body to continue pursuing these projects, as the core values of CIP do not lie on which internship we would have chosen or where we gain out experience, but how we choose to prioritize and use our time. Here is our proposal:

  1. Montclair High School Seniors who choose to participate in CIP will receive approval from MHS administration to complete a personal project of their choice, much like how internship positions had to be approved before proceeding with original CIP plans. This personal project would be any outlet that can be completed at home, such as an art piece, musical compilation, personal essay, or even projects that benefit the community (sewing masks for undersupplied hospitals, providing online tutoring, etc). Seniors who have existing internship opportunities could adapt them for remote participation where applicable. Ultimately, Seniors will create comprehensive interest-driven projects, with the goal of submitting a completed summative assessment to administration.
  2. Montclair High School Seniors who choose to participate in CIP will be required to complete weekly journals describing the progression of their work and the experience they have had so far, which is an aspect of CIP that can easily be preserved from original plans. If possible, Seniors would still be able to attend online seminars and submit responses through the same online format they originally existed in.

Time and time again, the MHS student body has proven just how much ingenuity, creativity, and potential that we hold. We have students pursuing their interests in every field, and collaborating with their peers to create engaging and vibrant communities. We are no stranger to conflict either– we made it through Junior year with no stairs. Most importantly, we have a community of Seniors who are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in during what should be the best four years of our lives. We urge you to consider our proposal, and we are hopeful about working together with you and discussing any requirements you may have in order to come to a conclusion that benefits everyone. We thank you immensely for taking the time to hear student voices, and we look forward to a response.

Respectfully,

Anna Gustavsen, Julia Fuchs, and Montclair High School’s Class of 2020
