Stop Montana State University from overcharging for online education
Why this petition matters
Throughout the last few months Montana State has left us wondering what will be happening with our education. With the lack of information, decision making about how to handle the pandemic, and still charging full tuition with the added distribution fees it's time to take action!
As students (and alumni) of the university we know that it does not come at a low cost to receive an education. We pay for services such as the buildings, labs, computers, libraries, gyms, and so forth. While these services are important, the most important service we pay for is to be on campus with our professors and peers to support and help us throughout our journey with academia on campus.
With the switch to online classes we are no longer using these facilities, networks, gyms, amongst other important resources we no longer have access to.
We are paying for activity and athletic fees which we likely will not be using, various building fees such as the SUB and Student building, computer fees, equipment fees, rec and recreational fees and on top of all of these a new fee for distributed learning (a fee for having online classes). These fees all add up substantially and could save students up to 1000 dollars or more!
Charging full price for tuition and charging an extra fee for online classes while not offering a refund to students for the lack of services for if, and or when, we go online is unacceptable and should not be tolerated. There are many reasons why online colleges, while just as credible of an education, simply do not charge as much as a university campus. These include and are not limited to the use of facilities and resources that are available on a campus.
If you agree that we should not have to pay fees for services we cannot use if we go online, please sign with us!
