Stop the production of Genetically Modified Organisms

The Issue

GMOs are BAD for you and the environment. They WON'T solve the food crisis, they DO NOT increase yield potential, they increase pesticide use, and they're a long-term economic disaster for farmers. Genetically modified organisms have been linked to thousands of toxic or allergic-type reactions, thousands of sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ and system studied in lab animals. Even though the Food and Drug administration has labeled them as "Generally Recognized as Safe", they cover up the health risks. The FDA does NOT require ANY safety evaluations or labeling of GMOs. GMOs are inherently unsafe. There are many reasons why GM plants present unique dangers, First, the process of genetic engineering itself creates unpredicted alterations, which means it could cause genes to be transfered or damaged. This could cause serious problems for future generations. A GM diet shows toxic reactions in the digestive tract also. Rats fed GM potatoes showed proliferative cell growth in the stomach and intestines. GM diets also cause liver damage. The liver cells from soy-fed mice showed anomalies. Antoniou, who does human gene therapy research in King's College London, said that although the long-term consequences of the GM soy diet are not known, it "could lead to liver damage and consequently general toxemia." GM fed animals had higher death rates and organ damage. There was also reproductive failures and infant mortality. All GM foods have something foreign and different. Several different studies have shown that they provoke reactions. WE'RE the Guinea Pigs: since GM foods are not properly tested before they enter the market, consumers are the guinea pigs. But this doesn't even count as an experiment. There's no monitoring and no controls. Due to the mounting evidence of harm, it is likely that GM foods are contributing to the deterioration of health in the United States, Canada, and other countries where it is consumed. But without post-marketing surveilance, the chances of tracing health problems to GM food are low. The incidence of a disease would have to increase dramatically before it was noticed, meaning that millions may have to get sick before a change is investigated. Tracking GM foods in North America is even more difficult since the foods are not labeled. With no government regulation of biotech corporations, it is left for consumers to protect ourselves.
