Polystyrene also know as Styrofoam is a toxic product that pollutes our bodies, oceans and waterways. To date more than 110 cities in California have banned polystyrene in the food service industry.
The Monrovia city council has banned PS from city buildings, the next step is to ban ALL polystyrene from Monrovia restaurants. The state was working on a PS ban, but needs to see more cities make a commitment before they try again. Lets get to 200 cities in California, Show the state that this is a serious issue.
Please read about PS here: http://www.cleanwater.org/files/publications/ca/cwa_fact_sheet_polystyrene_litter_2011_03.pdf
Styrene is listed as a potential cause of cancer. It is transmitted into food with heat and oil. Every human tested has been found to have styrene in their fat tissue.
Polystyrene is mostly air and is easily blown around, and often ends up as litter. As PS breaks down, it breaks into smaller and smaller pieces that fish and birds mistake of food.
Polystyrene is not recycled because it is often to dirty and costs to much to process, a 53' trailer of PS is worth about 10 bucks.
By 2050 there will be more plastics in the oceans than fish.
80% of ocean pollution come from land.
