Say No to Rezoning, Map 068, Parcel 009, from Agriculture to Industrial.

A request to rezone 955 McCowan Rd, (Map 068, Parcel 009) a 267 acre tract, from Agriculture to Industrial has been submitted to Monroe County Planning and Zoning. The majority of the property has frontage on Reedy Creek Rd. The change in zoning is requested to mine sand from the property. Per public record the proposed mine would employ 6 people.

The mine would be located on Tobesofkee Creek, a direct water source of Lake Tobesofkee.

Sand mining produces Crystalline Silica, an airborne carcinogen, which has been shown to cause a sometimes fatal lung disease known as silicosis, in addition to systemic lupus, kidney disease and a long list of debilitating illnesses. Crystalline Silica particles can not be seen and can travel for miles. It is particularly harmful for children.

The residents of the adjoining properties and those in the surrounding area, strongly and vehemently appose the mining of sand on said property. The negative impacts of a sand mine are wide spread and would cause significant and irreversible damage to the surrounding air, water table and wildlife. Property values could drop and the cost of the upkeep of the roads would fall on the county.

This rezoning would set a precedence for all of Monroe County. Your signature matters, as your quality of life here in Monroe County is threatened.

A quiet, residential and agricultural neighborhood could easily be destroyed if the rezoning is approved. Sign this petition to protect the quiet and bountiful countryside that generations of us call home.
