Monroe County has the opportunity to create Vote Centers, where anyone registered in the County may vote, and their vote will be assigned to the precinct in which they live, respecting all district and precinct lines for council, commissioner, state legislative, township, and congressional purposes. A bi-partisan committee has identified over thirty locations which are accessible, and which, as much as possible, recognize community traditions in voting.
The Monroe County election board is considering creating Vote Centers. There would be approximately 20 voting centers vs. approximately 80 precinct polling places. Since any registered voter can vote anywhere in the county, the process would be far more convenient for voters, and since there would be many fewer locations, they would be far less costly for taxpayers.
The Election Board decision on Vote Centers must, by law, be unanimous. Two of the three Board members support the concept; the third is reluctant to support it.
