Naomi Wynn started this petition to Monmouthshire County Council

Chepstow is a thriving market town with a growing population. Unfortunately due to the growing population this small town which is a gateway to the M48 bridge from the Forest of Dean and south Monmouthshire is becoming gridlocked each morning. Increasing journey times from 10 minutes to over 1 hour.

In the pandemic the decision was made the close the high street to allow for social distancing. Now that we are entering the new phase of the pandemic and rules have been relaxed this decision hasn't been reversed. This means the only currently available route through our busy market town is the A48 which is frequently disrupted due to accidents or HGV deliveries compounding the problem of only having one road through the town. Whilst there are advantages to closing the high street to allow more space for outdoor dining and a less polluted environment for shoppers when there is disruption to the town's main route there are calls for this to be reviewed.

The local transport links are poor with infrequent bus services and a centrally located train station.

The characteristics of this town whilst being part of its beauty and charm is that it is very hilly. Whilst a case could be made for cars to be kept on the driveway and the bicycles dusted off this isn't practical for many residents given fitness ability required to scale some of those inclines.

I am asking for Monmouthshire County Council to review what can be done in the short, medium and long term to ease the traffic congestion in Chepstow.

1. I would ask that before any new properties are built the impact on the traffic is assessed and the local traffic increases due to two new large housing estates locally are reviewed

2. Better local transport links with frequent and affordable bus services from all parts of the town.

3. Reopening of the High St, either occasionally when there is problems on the A48, during rush hours, or permanently.

4. Investigation into a by-pass

5. Other traffic easing measures.
