Why this petition matters

Started by Frankie Winters

Following a recent sharp uptake of graffiti pieces and tags appearing in the town and surrounding areas of Abergavenny, I propose this petition to delegate a specific site to become a legal and permanent place for graffiti artists, both local and from other areas are free to showcase their work, without fear of legal consequence.
In areas with a legal place for graffiti, there's always a huge decrease in wanton vandalism and graffiti as it has a dedicated spot to be done in. Which will remove the need for pieces to be removed from Abergavennys' Town walls and the cost that comes with the removal.

The site in mind personally for me, is the underpass tunnel between Llanfoist Cemetery and the Llanfoist Garden Centre. This tunnel has more than adequate space, ventilation and won't interfere with any local residents or business. It is out of sight to the public and to any tourists/visitors to the Llanfoist/Abergavenny area. The tunnel has suitable length and height to serve as a legal wall, without the cost of constructing one solely for this purpose.

Upkeep and litter removal will be undertaken by myself, as someone who would frequently be down there to monitor it, to make sure there are no wrongdoings; i.e Litter, loitering teenagers, inappropriate words or symbols on the wall, all which will be met with swift removal. However, any real graffiti artist already knows to always leave the place as you found it.

This petition is being made after already consulting with locals and passersby in the underpass, and all have met me with positive attitude and agreement towards this notion, so I can hope it comes to fruition and is taken seriously as I know this would seriously improve the problems we are having with graffiti in town, and besides it's a lot better to see art work being done on a plain, grey concrete wall on a particularly nice walk through our country paths.
