This past year, PGPCS had started the first 3 quarters of the school year completely online. In the last quarter, a hybrid option was provided where parents could choose what they considered to be best for their child; online or in-person learning.  Recent announcements from Joe Biden and Larry Hogan indicate their expectations and goals to get students back in-person to next school year. This seems  to  take away parents’ right to determine what they consider is best for their child's health and safety.  A local example is my High School where 5 students tested positive within the first five days of in person learning. This may sound like a trifling amount but the in-person population is extremely low, making this a greater percentage based on the actual attendance. We can only imagine how quickly the COVID-19 virus will spread when there is 100% capacity in the fall. Some students have high-risk family members at their home, creating serious consequences if they contract it, and potentially put their family in a hazardous situation. Another key point is that some students are flourishing with on-line learning – improving their grades and moving forward at a faster pace.  As a school district, you should try to do everything to provide your students opportunities to be as successful as possible. With that, we believe that PGCPS should give parents and students the option next year to be online OR in person for student and family safety, giving parents the opportunity to choose what's best for their child, and for their student’s success.
