“I think that making sure we improve schools that we have today, instead of opening up new schools, is also a just and right cause.”- Mayor Eric Garcetti, Monday, January 14, 2019

We call on the Los Angeles Unified School Board of Education to support Board Member Vladovic in asking the state for a moratorium on new charter schools.

As was shown during the recent teacher’s strike, educators, parents and community members stand strong for our public school system. It is time to put a moratorium on new charter growth and reassess the best ways to provide an excellent education for ALL of the students in Los Angeles.

Putting a moratorium on creating new charter schools will NOT impact existing charter schools. In fact, it will help them grow. Over 80% of charter schools are currently under-enrolled. This moratorium will benefit all students in Los Angeles.

We have seen a growing movement for a massive investment in Public Education. Last week over 500,000 public school families in Los Angeles took to the streets, and stood up in front of their schools. We are ready to do all that it takes. Now, we call on our school board to do the right thing and support this charter moratorium. Let’s invest in the schools we have now and fight together to improve the schools our Los Angeles students deserve.
