I love cats and once had an amazing cat who adopted us and stayed for 17 years. However after realising that our much loved pet did a lot of her hunting at night and brought "presents" home we put a stop to her going out after dark also for her own safety. She adjusted quite well to this and when a few years later we restricted her going out into the front garden and into the street she got used to it also. She lived to be about 20 and was healthy and content for a long time.

In this increasingly urbanised population where we are fully aware of impacts from clearing, to retain urban wildlife we need to share and spare habitat - and having roaming predators within remaining habitat defeats purpose on conserving reserves for wildlife.

There's no reason for cats to be outside. Anytime. Still less at night. It's the right thing to do.

I'm signing this to put a curfew on the cat's outdoor freedom to ensure that Australian native animals can live for their full life expectancy, unharmed.

I'm signing this because I agree that feral cats are a major problem, and pet cats should be kept in the house at all times to ensure that Australia's native wildlife can continue to live and strive.

Unlike dogs, which are scavengers and do minimal damage to wildlife, cats are a predator which does enormous damage to remnant Australian wildlife and perversely, I have observed that some cat owners are even proud of the fat that their cats go out at nigh and kill wildlife.

Pet owners need to understand the reality about their day friendly pets and make change.
