Last week, Mitch McConnell blocked two bipartisan bills to secure our elections against Russian and foreign influence from getting a vote. And when people began calling him “Moscow Mitch” because of it, McConnell furiously took to the Senate floor and defended his refusal to allow a vote to protect our elections – calling it a “shameful smear” and likening it to McCarthyism.

The fact of the matter, though, is that the bipartisan bills Mitch is blocking are commonsense ways that we can try to protect our elections from the type of influence that even Trump’s own administration says Russia is still engaging in. And if Moscow Mitch doesn’t like his new nickname, then maybe he should stop siding with Russia and start holding votes on bills that would actually do something about it.

To give you a sense of how obvious the proposals Mitch is blocking are, here are some of the election security bills waiting to get out of Mitch's legislative "graveyard:"

  • The DETER Act is a bipartisan bill introduced by Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Chris Van Hollen. It is aimed at deterring Russia and other foreign adversaries by making clear how the United States will retaliate against any country that tries to interfere in our elections. It also requires that the Director of National Intelligence reports to Congress if any meddling occurs.
  • The Secure Elections Act is a bipartisan bill introduced by Republican James Lankford and Democrat Amy Klobuchar. The bill would give the Department of Homeland Security primary responsibility for sharing information about threats and establish grants to help states inspect paper ballots, replace outdated or insufficient voting machines, and address any vulnerabilities identified.
  • The FIRE Act is a bipartisan bill introduced by Republican Susan Collins and Democrat Mark Warner. It would require all presidential campaigns to report to the FBI and FEC if any foreign governments or foreign citizens try to offer information, money, or other services to influence an election.
  • The Honest Ads Act is a bipartisan bill introduced by Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Amy Klobuchar. It would require public disclosure of who pays for internet and social media advertising in political campaigns. It would also require online platforms and companies to make reasonable efforts to ensure that foreign governments and individuals are not purchasing ads to influence American elections.

These may seem like commonsense ideas (because they are), but Mitch McConnell claims that they are “partisan” bills that would “benefit” Democrats, and so he is refusing to allow a vote on any of them. Why? The only explanation is that Mitch McConnell actually WANTS Russia to interfere in our elections again, because he’s hoping it will “benefit” him, Donald Trump, and the Republicans.

Mitch swore an oath when he became a senator to "defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." But it is clear now that Moscow Mitch himself has become a threat to our constitution and to our democracy.
